The holidays are a time for family, friends, great food, and making memories—not unexpected plumbing problems. At Diamond Plumbing, we see a noticeable increase in plumbing issues during the Christmas and holiday season, and most of them are completely preventable.

Whether you’re hosting guests, cooking big meals, or heading out of town, these simple holiday plumbing tips can help keep your home running smoothly all season long.

 1. Be Kind to Your Garbage Disposal

Holiday cooking puts extra strain on kitchen plumbing. One of the most common Christmas plumbing problems we see is clogged or broken garbage disposals.

Avoid putting these down the disposal:

  • Grease, fats, and oils

  • Turkey bones or skin

  • Potato peels

  • Coffee grounds

  • Eggshells

Pro Tip: Scrape plates into the trash first, then rinse lightly before using the disposal. If your disposal starts humming or draining slowly, stop using it and give us a call before it turns into a bigger problem.

 2. Protect Pipes From Freezing Weather

Cold Oklahoma nights can be tough on plumbing—especially in older homes or homes with exposed pipes.

Holiday freeze-prevention tips:

  • Insulate exposed pipes in garages, crawl spaces, and exterior walls

  • Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses

  • Leave cabinet doors open under sinks during hard freezes

  • Let faucets drip slightly during extreme cold

Frozen pipes can burst and cause major damage, so a little prevention goes a long way

.

 3. More Guests = More Bathroom Use

Hosting family and friends? More people means more strain on toilets, drains, and water heaters.

Helpful hosting tips:

  • Remind guests: only toilet paper goes in the toilet

  • Keep a plunger handy—just in case

  • Space out showers if possible

  • Watch for slow drains or gurgling sounds

If your toilet is already struggling, the holidays aren’t the time to ignore it.

 4. Is Your Water Heater Ready for the Holidays?

Between extra laundry, dishes, and showers, your water heater works overtime during the holidays.

Warning signs your water heater may need attention:

  • Running out of hot water

  • Rusty or discolored water

  • Strange popping or rumbling noises

  • Leaks around the tank

If you’re unsure your water heater can keep up, Diamond Plumbing can inspect or service it before guests arrive.

 5. Going Out of Town? Don’t Forget Your Plumbing

If you’re traveling for Christmas, take a few minutes to protect your home before you leave.

Before-you-go checklist:

  • Turn off the main water supply if possible

  • Set your thermostat to at least 55°F

  • Check for any small leaks

  • Ask a neighbor to keep an eye on things

Coming home to a plumbing emergency is never a fun holiday surprise.
